How to Choose a Wedding Photographer in India (+ Shot List)
The 30-second answer

Book your photographer 8–10 months out (good teams take one wedding per date), budget 8–10% of total wedding cost (₹1.5–6 lakh for a full multi-event team in metros), and judge them on three things: full wedding albums (not Instagram highlights), how they shoot in YOUR venue's lighting conditions (dim banquet halls expose weak teams), and the contract's deliverables — raw count, edited count, album, video lengths, and delivery timeline in writing.

The decisions that matter most

  1. 01

Judge complete galleries, not a social-media highlight reel.

  2. 02

Confirm the named team that will actually cover your wedding.

  3. 03

Define edited-photo count, films, albums and delivery dates in writing.

The vetting checklist

  1. Ask for 2–3 complete wedding galleries of weddings like yours (same scale, similar venues). Anyone's best 30 shots look great.
  2. Night/indoor work — most Indian weddings happen in challenging light. Their banquet-hall pheras photos tell the truth.
  3. Who actually shoots? Big studios subcontract. Get the names of YOUR team in the contract.
  4. Deliverables in writing: edited photo count (400–800 typical for 3 events), full video + teaser + reels, album specs, delivery time (60–90 days is fair; "6 months" is a red flag).
  5. Candid + traditional both. Indian families need the posed group photos AND the candid storytelling — confirm the team covers both, ideally as separate shooters.

The shot list to hand over

Couple's must-haves: first looks, jaimala lift chaos, pheras close-ups, sindoor moment, vidaai. Family must-haves: one formal photo per family branch (LIST the branches — this prevents the post-wedding "we got no photo with Nani" tragedy), milni pairs, parents' candids. Detail shots: outfits hanging, jewellery, invite/website on a phone, mandap, food. Share the list and the day's full schedule a week out — your wedding website's itinerary page does this in one link.

FAQ

Pre-wedding shoot: worth it?

Beyond the photos, it's a working session with your team — you'll be visibly more relaxed in the wedding photos. If budget is tight, a 2-hour local session beats a Goa production.

Should we feed the photo team?

Yes, always, in the contract or not. A 14-hour day runs on vendor meals.

Raw files: should we ask for them?

Most teams won't give raws (it's their negative). Negotiate a higher edited count instead.

05
Portfolio review

Look for difficult moments, not only beautiful ones

Review crowded stages, mixed indoor lighting, family formals, fast baraat movement and ceremony angles. These situations reveal technical discipline and team coordination more clearly than golden-hour portraits.

Ask how the team handles overlapping events and whether a senior photographer is present at each important function.

06
Creative alignment

Describe the photographs you want to feel

Words such as candid, editorial and cinematic are interpreted differently. Share a small reference set and explain what you like: color, closeness, movement, family presence or quiet moments.

Also name what you dislike. A useful brief includes boundaries around staged shots, intrusive lighting, social posting and private rituals.
