Mehndi Function Checklist Everything You Need
The 30-second answer

A mehndi function needs five things organized in advance: the mehndi artist booked 2–3 months out (bridal mehndi takes 3–5 hours, so start early in the day), 2–4 additional artists for guests (one artist covers ~10–12 guests in an afternoon), comfortable floor seating with cushions and low tables, finger food guests can eat with henna-wet hands, and entertainment (dhol or playlist) to carry the 4–5 hours.

Save this

The decisions that matter most

  1. 01

Start bridal mehndi early enough that the bride is not sitting through the entire guest event.

  2. 02

Estimate guest-artist capacity before booking; one artist cannot serve a large crowd in an afternoon.

  3. 03

Use natural brown henna and ask vendors directly about ingredients.

The checklist

Booking (2–3 months out)

  • Bridal mehndi artist (₹5,000–50,000 by city and intricacy) — see her actual work, not Instagram reposts
  • Guest artists: 1 per 10–12 guests
  • Dhol player or playlist + speaker

Setup

  • Floor seating: mattresses, cushions, bolsters, low tables
  • Shaded/ventilated space — henna + sweat is a bad mix
  • Good lighting where the bride sits (photos!)
  • Decor: marigolds, drapes, that one photo-corner

Food (the henna-hands menu)

  • Bite-size only: chaat cups, mini samosas, fruit skewers, kulfi sticks
  • Straws in every drink
  • Someone assigned to feed the bride — her hands are out of service for hours

Bride-specific

  • Dark outfit or one she can sit in for 4 hours without adjusting
  • Phone stand + someone to manage her messages
  • Sugar-lemon mix for after; clove smoke if you follow tradition
  • No water on hands for 8–12 hours after — plan her evening accordingly

Timing the day

Bridal mehndi should START 1–2 days before the wedding, early enough to finish in daylight. Guests arrive after the bride's base work is underway. Color deepens over 48 hours — this is why mehndi isn't done the morning of the wedding.

FAQ

How long does bridal mehndi take?

3–5 hours for full hands-to-elbows and feet. Simple designs: 1–2 hours.

How do I tell guests timing and what to wear?

Put the mehndi card on your wedding website: timing window ("come anytime 2–6 PM"), dress note (greens/yellows are traditional), and the venue map.

Natural or chemical henna?

Insist on natural henna; "black mehndi" with PPD causes burns. Ask the artist directly.

04
Artist brief

Define the guest design before comparing artist counts

A small motif on one hand and an elbow-length design are not the same unit of work. Share a reference for the guest design, event duration and expected demand so the lead artist can recommend a credible team size.

Use tokens or a simple sign-up list when many guests want mehndi. It prevents queue anxiety and lets guests eat, socialize or enjoy entertainment instead of guarding a place in line.

05
Safety

Ask what is inside the cone

Traditional henna produces an orange-to-brown stain that darkens over time. Products marketed as instant or black henna may contain other dyes. The FDA has documented adverse reactions associated with products sold as black henna; ask for ingredient clarity and avoid a vendor who dismisses the question.

Anyone with a history of skin reactions should seek medical advice before application. Keep the artist's product details and contact information until after the event.

Scope, assumptions and editorial standard

Artist speed varies substantially by design complexity. Confirm capacity using the exact guest design you plan to offer, not a generic artist estimate.
